Every year 500,000 students in elementary school will miss a space in high school and 200,000 students in high school will miss a place in college because of the high cost of education and lack of available slots. After the 6th grade, parents must pay for their children to receive further education. Poor children therefore receive no education past the 7th grade if they manage to go that far. Children are placed in what we would term "boarding schools". They live on campus and are only allowed to visit their parents on school breaks.
The RAHMI ministry believes that all children need an education in order to be able to climb out of the pit of poverty. The initial approach to combatting illiteracy in Kenya will be to build a K - 12 grade school on the ministry property in Thika - about 60 miles outside of Nairobi. Those who can afford to pay will be asked to do so, but no child will be turned away because of lack of resources. Children from grades one through six will be thoroughly taught the Word of God in order to build a strong Biblically sound foundation. (Deut. 6:1 - 10) RAHMI's educational motto is "Give me your child for 6 years and the child will die a Christian." Children in Grades one through twelve will receive basic literacy and life skills training. The school will be built as the Lord provides the funds and sends the teachers.
